generation Y

Generation Y: Living for the Moment
They might be arrogant, but they are work smart. They like to challenge but also welcome change. Meet Generation Y – young people who were born in the 1980s and early 1990s who will soon become the major economic force in the world.

Hallie Yeung, 24, works in an international bank, and it’s her third job in the two years since she graduated. “I first worked for an airline, but the work was so boring I quit after two months. Then I got an offer in an American bank. The pay was good, but the working hours were long. I always worked late and went home at midnight. I stayed at the job for more than a year.”

She says she grew up in a working-class family, and she’s grateful her parents spent their lives working hard to make ends meet, but it’s not the kind of life she wants to lead. It’s a sentiment shared by many others in her generation.

Unlike their parents who worked hard and saved money for the future. Generation Y embrace a “work hard, play hard” attitude. The business sector long ago realized, as a generation, these young people are hungry consumers always looking for instant gratification, willing to splash money on luxury products, fine restaurants or overseas travel as they flit from job to job.

But they are a challenge for employers – young, energetic and full of potential, they don’t stick at anything. A local survey found that on average H. K. workers under 30 change their jobs once a year. Young professionals will have held as many as eight jobs by the time they are 32.

Salary used to be the carrot all workers chased, but Generation Y care less about money than job satisfaction, work environment and learning opportunities. They dislike tedious and old-fashioned practices, and will confront authority when necessary. If they are not happy with their work, they won’t hesitate to type a resignation letter and look for a new job.

Their confidence comes from security, which they have enjoyed since they were born. Experiencing neither war, long-term poverty nor massive unemployment, Generation Y usually have solid family support and have received a good education. They are aware they have more choices and resources, and are not shy to speak out about what they want.

I) Answer the following questions.
1. Write out the adjectives in the article that describe Generation Y.
2. What do Generation Y want from a job?
3. Why does Hallie hop from job to job?
4. How do Generation Y differ from their parents?
5. Why are Generation Y a challenge for employers?
6. Why do Generation Y not treasure their job?

II) Fill in the blanks with the bolded words in the article.
Generation Y 1.________(jump) from job to job. They hate 2.________(boring) practices and are not afraid of 3.________(stand up and fight with) authority. If they are not happy about the job, they will just 4.__________(leave). They will not 5.____________(stop and think again). They do not stick at their jobs because they have no experience of 6.____________(being poor).
They 7.___________(hold) a work hard, play hard attitude. They look for 8.__________ ___________ (immediate satisfaction) and do not mind 9.____________(spending) money on expensive products. They 10. are _________ of (know) the choices and resource they have, so they have a strong sense of 11._______ (safety). Some may find them 12.___________(too proud) but they just speak out what they want.

wsc change

Many of the department's people in WSC are like the high officials in the late Ching Dynasty. The new age is coming, and they just like everything to be kept as before. - no change. If you want to change, you will be like Kwang Shui, taken prisoner under house arrest after the 100 days reform. They are waiting for the armies from Eight Nations to come and destroy them totally. In everyone's heart, there is an Empress Dowager, who hates changes, who likes things to stay the way they used to. But the time keeps changing, and we must change to survive.

bejeweled

It's like drug addiction*
It sucks your life away
It sucks your time away
time you could have devoted to other more useful things
like
reading a newspaper
making a walking stick
running three rounds down the park
stretching outside the balcony filling your lung with some fresh air
preparing lessons for the Form 4 & 6, for the department, for your kid, for your heatlh, for God, for a better you
You don't grow thin, or sick on the outside
but your inside is no different from a junkie
you wake up
playing it
you play it
before your sleep
You know it is programmed to make you feel good
It makes you keep trying
and feel useful
what is better than
problems solved infront of your eyes with your
eyes, hand, mind..all coordinated
and rewarded instantaneously
you are totally absorbed
and nothing is better than doing a thing that totally absorbs you.
like teaching a class a poem, and winning it
teaching a good lesson
reading a good compo..
but this game
is just one click away
and it can happen every day
easy to lay hands on
and once you lay your hand on it
it grabs you tight
and you dope on
in front of your wife
your kids
your maid
leaving behind
your books you borrowed from school
the work you bring home thinking you will be doing
your bulging belly
your weakening bones, muscles and joints
your glorious running days
you don't look much like a walking person with a will of his own
but a zombie
with your fingers & your eyes moving, the pleasure zone ticking
urging you on
one more game
one more game
to better your score
the promise is always there
one more game to be a faster you
a higher score you
the promise of becoming a better, stronger person
is what is the most tempting
the process of being one better
though elusive
sucks you on
the fun thing is
no matter how high your score is
you are never satisfied
and a higher level is always one click away
the addiction is real
it's handy, easy to get, satifying
cos the satisfiaction is not the score
but the process of acheiving the one better you
which everybody wants at heart
Gosh
if every student's learning tasks are set with such nature
every student would love do them

ways teaching 2010

Speech
I was thinking of using the UN 12 old girl to teach speech, ask students to imitate in small groups of 2 to 3, or 3 to 4

I was thinking of using my daughter's speech - Amazing nature, what we can learn from it, and ask students research a few National Geographics, and write a similar speech and enter the youth group competition where you can fix your own topic. But here, we will have them talk about the same topic. Amazing nature, what we can learn from it.

And the National Geographic books, we put them all in the library for the students to borrow.

And students, all have to enter the speech competition.

......

And for Teaching Form 6, I would teach oral first. how to look at the discussion topic to identify the major points asked. how to find at the points in the piece to point in your structure , way to handle the audience in the beginning (address their need, be close, personalize the topic and sell yourself) and the end, and the middle. How to take notes, (the less the better, spending more time in organizing rather than copying.

I am going to teach debate. by showing the two cute kids arguing.:http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=zh-TW&source=hp&q=youtube%2C+two+kids+arguing&meta=&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Every body must join one item in junior form and one in senior form.

Writing

Crazy idea - be the first one to have 10 articles published in the SCMP letters to the Editor to get $ 1000?, second one, $ 900?, third, $ 800?, fourth, $ 700? ( book coupon) till the $100 coupon is given out.
Then, all late comers will get one hundred when they fulfill their target till the term ends.

For junior, they can write to the young post to get their articles printed, same rule applies,
but starting $500, $450,...

Listening..
listening to different versions of the same song on youtube and see how different singers address to different audience at different times or different singers express themselves at the same time. Students can play the songs in class and point out the difference they observe. eg.Wishing You Where Somehow Here Again by Rachel Barrel is different from Tabitha Webb. The later seems to be addressing to the more modern women while Rachel is addressing to the more traditional type. There is more self, more anguish in Tabby's body language and on Tabby's face, but you don't see that on Rachel. She is kind of man's dream girl, quietly waiting for her man to come to her. But Tabby seems to have her own want, own desire as a person and not the object of desire for man to fantasize on.
Rachel's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx5wojfcabM&feature=related
Tabby's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmGNJtnyf1Y
Contrast the two with an innocent, desexed version of a young girl, Hollie Steel
: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWU4_-QFo2g&feature=fvw

Students can compare Sarah Brightman's and Emmy Rossum's, this same song or any song with a lit background or an unlit background, we introduce, prescribe, list (that means we should prepare a song list, or give a few samples )
